In addition, there is a long-standing belief that happiness is the result of identifying one’s strengths and virtues and living a life that cultivates and reflects them ( Aristotle, 2002). Results suggest that a fulfilling life includes a sense of meaning ( Steger, 2009), strong interpersonal relationships ( Myers, 2000), and the pursuit and attainment of personal goals ( Emmons, 2003). In recent years, there has been growing interest in understanding the factors that contribute to people experiencing meaningful and happy lives (e.g., Lyubomirsky, Sheldon, & Schkade, 2005 Seligman, 2002, 2008 Veenhoven, 2003). In all, we present this theory to provide researchers with a framework for understanding self-connection so that they can utilize this concept to better support the efforts of researchers and practitioners alike to increase individuals’ well-being in various contexts. Finally, we provide initial recommendations for future research, including potential ways to promote self-connection. Following, we discuss some of the potential relationships between self-connection and various aspects of mental health and well-being. We next compare and contrast self-connection to related constructs, including mindfulness and authenticity. First, we position the concept within the broader self literature and provide the empirical context for our proposed definition of self-connection. We define self-connection as consisting of three components: 1) an awareness of oneself, 2) an acceptance of oneself based on this awareness, and 3) an alignment of one’s behavior with this awareness. ![]() Coherence is a also a key component of resilience.We provide a theoretical framework for what it means to be self-connected and propose that self-connection is an important potential contributor to a person’s well-being. When psychologically we experience less inner conflicts, we enjoy greater peace. Life coherence creates an enduring and dynamic feeling of confidence that one’s environment is predictable and kind. Psychological Coherence and WellnessĪ central component of psychological wellness is a person’s sense of a unified whole. Basically, if incoming information clashes with internal beliefs (dissonance), then we are more likely to move on without processing the new information. This matches well with selective information processing. He explains that an “event must have internal coherence- that is, makes sense-or it will not register properly in awareness.” He continues “an incoherent event may actually present itself briefly in consciousness as a distracting moment of confusion” ( 2002). suggests that coherence is important for new events to register in consciousness. Siegel explains “by organizing the self across past, present, and future, the integrating mind creates a sense of coherence and continuity.” He continues, “narrative coherence is reflected in the way a life story is told and the manner in which life is lived” ( 2020). Psychological Coherence is opposite of psychological dissonance.ĭaniel Siegel holds that a coherent narrative is an essential aspect of integrating past experiences into a healthy present. ![]() Coherent beliefs flow smoothly with other aspects of our life without conflict or contradiction. Psychological coherence refers to a system, a belief, or view where the different parts (emotions, memories, beliefs) fit together to form a perfect whole. ![]() Coherenceliterally means holding or sticking together.
